The Wormhole Diving
A Natural Wonder Beneath Dún Aengus.
Just a short distance from the dramatic cliffs of Dún Aengus lies one of the Aran Islands’ most fascinating natural features the Wormhole (Poll na bPéist). This perfectly rectangular tidal pool is carved into the ancient limestone of Inis Mór and is often described as a true wonder of our world.
Its name may come from tales of sea serpents (possibly Basking Sharks) becoming trapped between tides, or from the powerful surges of water that puff upward through the rock, resembling the spout of a whale. Measuring approximately 30 metres long by 10 metres wide, the Wormhole is believed to be of unknown depth a mystery that adds to its wild beauty.
